Single Gender Classrooms in Public Schools

Various cities in the U.S. have implemented same gender classrooms rooms in their public schools. Boys and girls are not entirely separated. During lunch and classes such as P.E. or electives, the boys and girls come together. One of the reasons educators are trying this concept out is due to the fact that boys and girls develop differently. Not to say one is better than the other but there is a difference. Taking it a little further, comparing two students together, you will find different learning styles.

Various articles suggest that students do better academically in single gender classrooms since there are less distractions in the classroom. Students do not have to "look good", impress or deal with romance inside the classroom. Students can focus better and learn more about themselves. Many start discovering their identity much sooner.

The Results (summary)
  • There are better test scores (See: UCLA Report)
  • A sense of brotherhood/sisterhood between classmates
  • Develop leadership skills by participation in leadership roles in school
  • Less fights

I remember the time when school administration was considering uniforms for my school. I was so upset of the thought since it would change how we attended class. Generally speaking, this topic brings similar sentiment in the sense of the changes it will bring a school. However, single gender classrooms sound like an interesting idea to explore. These new classrooms do seem similar to Sunday School when i was younger.
